PWA vs Native App: the right choice for your e-commerce site in 2026

The right frontend choice for your e-commerce

PWA, native app, hybrid app: three approaches, three budgets, three performance levels. How to choose?

PWA (Progressive Web App)

**Pros:**

  • Instant installation via browser
  • No store fees (App Store, Google Play)
  • Real-time updates (no store review)
  • Near-native performance
  • SEO (PWAs are indexed by Google)

**Cons:**

  • Limited access to native APIs (Bluetooth, NFC)
  • No visibility in the App Store

Native App

**Pros:**

  • Maximum performance
  • Full access to phone APIs
  • Optimal user experience
  • Store visibility

**Cons:**

  • High development cost (iOS + Android)
  • Two codebase maintenance
  • Updates subject to store review

Hybrid App

**Pros:**

  • Single codebase for iOS and Android
  • Intermediate cost
  • Access to native APIs via plugins

**Cons:**

  • Lower performance than native
  • Less fluid UI on complex animations

My advice for 2026

For most e-commerce sites, **PWA offers the best value for money**. Native apps remain relevant for very high volumes with advanced mobile-first strategies. Hybrid is rarely the optimal compromise.
