PWA vs Native App: the right choice for your e-commerce site in 2026
The right frontend choice for your e-commerce
PWA, native app, hybrid app: three approaches, three budgets, three performance levels. How to choose?
PWA (Progressive Web App)
**Pros:**
- Instant installation via browser
- No store fees (App Store, Google Play)
- Real-time updates (no store review)
- Near-native performance
- SEO (PWAs are indexed by Google)
**Cons:**
- Limited access to native APIs (Bluetooth, NFC)
- No visibility in the App Store
Native App
**Pros:**
- Maximum performance
- Full access to phone APIs
- Optimal user experience
- Store visibility
**Cons:**
- High development cost (iOS + Android)
- Two codebase maintenance
- Updates subject to store review
Hybrid App
**Pros:**
- Single codebase for iOS and Android
- Intermediate cost
- Access to native APIs via plugins
**Cons:**
- Lower performance than native
- Less fluid UI on complex animations
My advice for 2026
For most e-commerce sites, **PWA offers the best value for money**. Native apps remain relevant for very high volumes with advanced mobile-first strategies. Hybrid is rarely the optimal compromise.
